Western Health Rebuilds Identity Management System

Western Health in Victoria engaged IT solutions and managed services provider Logicalis Australia to separate and rebuild its legacy identity management system that it shared with two other major hospitals.

The health service operates four public acute hospitals – Sunshine Hospital, Footscray Hospital, Williamstown Hospital and Bacchus Marsh, as well as some community care services.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT

Western Health had to quickly address the rapid changes brought about by the global pandemic. He had to quickly transition to remote work, redirect his resources to establish a vaccination center and, at one point, manage nursing homes. Before the pandemic, it was growing rapidly as a healthcare provider, onboarding 3,000 new employees in a year, and was about to embark on a major merger project with Djerriwarrh Health Services.

Amid all of this, Western Health brought in Logicalis to rework its legacy identity management system, which it saw as a “major roadblock” to its merger. The system, which was based on Microsoft Active Directory, manages the identity, authentication and authorization of all users of its network and computing resources.

With an upgraded system, Western Health is now “well positioned to further modernize its operations, particularly the digital workplace.”

It also has a “significantly improved safety posture”, according to Sam Psathas, health sector manager for Logicalis Australia. Its identity system for onboarding and offboarding staff works instantly; it now has single sign-on and allows a single identity for all internal systems, eliminating the need for multiple user IDs and passwords.

Cameron McBride, director of digital technology services at Western Health, said Logicalis has helped ease the pressure on staff as they work to provide care in a remote setting.

THE GREAT TREND

Another Victoria-based public healthcare provider, Peninsula Health, also recently contracted Logicalis to deploy Citrix Workspace, which is becoming the backbone of its telemedicine service delivery amid the ongoing pandemic. Logicalis has also enabled work-from-home arrangements for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.
